Massachusetts Historical Society

Dr. Catherine Allgor has stepped down as President of the MHS. Dr. Allgor led the MHS for 7 years, putting it on a path for growth and success in carrying its mission forward with a renewed commitment to the mandate to collect, conserve, and share the collection. She fostered an empathic and productive work culture with an emphasis on excellence. She successfully guided the MHS through the COVID pandemic, spearheaded a salary study, oversaw a strategic restructuring of the MHS, and brought an outgoing presence and scholarly background to MHS programs and events. Dr. Allgor helped raise the Society’s profile in the community by expanding and modernizing the core mission to be relevant to the 21st century, and to have more impact with many communities, most notably Massachusetts teachers and students. Now, she is eager for a new adventure. We thank Dr. Allgor for her leadership, congratulate her on her many achievements, and wish her all the best in her future endeavors.

We are happy to announce that Senior Vice President for Collections & Content Development Brenda Lawson will step in as Interim President while we execute a search for a new president. Under Brenda’s leadership, the MHS will be in good hands providing stability and ensuring key initiatives continue. Her experience and 35-year tenure with the MHS will be invaluable during this transition. We want to assure all of you that the priorities and values of the MHS will remain unchanged.
